How to split an uneven roster into teams
An uneven roster should change group sizes, not leave somebody out.
Start with the number of teams
If you know you need three groups, select Number of teams and enter 3. The tool divides the roster as evenly as possible. Ten people become groups of four, three and three. Eleven become four, four and three. The difference between the largest and smallest team is always at most one.
| Roster | Teams | Resulting sizes |
|---|---|---|
| 7 people | 3 | 3, 2, 2 |
| 10 people | 3 | 4, 3, 3 |
| 17 people | 4 | 5, 4, 4, 4 |
Start with a maximum group size
If your activity allows up to six people in each group, select People per team and enter 6. With 29 people, five groups are needed: six, six, six, six and five. The setting is a maximum, not a promise that every group will have exactly six members.
With ten people and a maximum of three, four balanced groups are created: three, three, two and two. Making three groups of three would leave a person out; making a group of four would break the maximum. Neither happens here.
Random does not mean matched by ability
The generator only knows the list you enter. It does not judge experience, strength, responsibilities or friendships. If each group needs a particular role, review the result and make those adjustments separately. Decide the rules before generating teams so everybody understands the process.
Check the roster once
Blank lines are ignored. Repeated names are kept as separate entries. If two different people share a name, label them clearly, such as Alex R and Alex T. If somebody was accidentally pasted twice, remove the extra entry before grouping.
